Llorenç Villalonga
Miralls de la ficció (Mirrors
of Fiction)
In this documentary, using
fragments from Falses memòries de Salvador Orlan, and other
works, we wanted to let the writer himself tell us important events of
his life. It is a memory reconstructed with details, instants, some unfinished
remembrances which allow us to have a high-relieve vision of Villalonga.
Elegiac in some parts (the description of his mother, for instance), contradictory
in others (his relationship with his father, the Civil War), the documentary
shows us the construction of a character which is not totally complete,
as he wanted to hide his real face behind masks. In some way, this literary
man who creates new realities wins the game against the true Villalonga.
That is why these images also want to be a recreation of fiction, or several
fictions, the ones that he draw during his life. But where we really get
to know a novelist, as always happens, is in his own work. Everything else
is only biography.

Faust
Faust Theatrical adaptation
from a part of Bearn. Fragment from Real Video of 20 minutes of
a dialog between Toni and the priest, one of most important parts of the
piece.
Synopsis of the piece:
It was initially a script, a synthesis of the first part of the novel Bearn:
«Sota el signe de Faust» (Under the sign of Faust). The second
part, «La pau regna a Bearn» (Peace in Bearn), has its theatrical
correspondent in Filemó i Baucis (Filemó and Baucis). With
this method, the author wanted to free characters from authorial omniscience
and omnipresence, allowing them to speak for themselves. The piece starts
ten years after don Toni and Xima’s escape to Paris, she’s the seduced
and seductive niece. All the story is ambivalent. The lovers go to the
preview of Faust, the opera by Gounod. She’s entering triumphantly
the great world as he tries to recover, as Faust, his lost youth. The scandal
at Bearn, a small village, is enormous. The return of the master proves
his own vital failure. His wife, so conscientiously, decides the convenience
of a separation. They live in separated houses. But peace will be disturbed
by Xima’s arrival. She’s also ruined and defeated, and wants to get everything
she can from her ex-lover. In order to do it, she tries to turn back to
Paris with her uncle to attend Faust again. He does not want to go, but
he offers her, instead, a diamante necklace, a family inheritance. It is
the price of her last favour —which we can not see in the drama—, synthesized
by Toni in these words: "I did not like it very much". This sentence brings
a new vital meaning for him. He can now let behind the faustic feeling.
Reason and consciousness —he is now a mature man— make him take notice
of himself. The first step is the reconciliation with his wife, which comes
naturally after a stormy car ride in the master’s lands. But he wants a
deep change in his life, and for that he starts writing his own memories
to recover lost time. This memory of a life time will become his protection,
his safe harbour, forever.
