Foundation House Museum Llorenç
Villalonga
| Foundation
The House Museum Llorenç Villalonga, at the Binissalem village,
is a typical Majorcan building, known as Can Sabater. The writer
used to spend summers there and he lived in that house during the Civil
War. It was bought by the Consell de Mallorca in December 1996 and, after
constituting it as a foundation, the House Museum was inaugurated in May
28th of 1999. |

|
Ground floor
|
|
| It's
main purpose is to divulge the personality and work of one of Majorca's
most important 20th century writers. He was an acknowledged intellectual
and author of a large literary and journalistic work. At the same time,
the House Museum intends to be a comprehensive centre and to generate activities
related to Mallorca's literature of the 20th century, as well as world-wide
literature.
The
Foundation is managed by a Patronage formed by memebers of the Consell de Mallorca,
the University of Balearic Islands and a the Binissalem Town Hall. This
Patronage is completed with the election of one member from each political
party represented in the Consell de Mallorca.
The Foundation also counts
with an Assessing Commission formed by specialists on Villalonga's
work and life as Carme Arnau, M. del Carme Bosch, Daniel Cid, Damià
Ferrà-Ponç, Josep A. Grimalt, Josep Massot i Muntaner, Joaquim
Molas, Baltasar Porcel, Pere Rosselló Bover, Vicent Simbor Roig,
Josep Zaforteza Calvet, the Associació d'Escriptors en Llengua Catalana
and the Pen Club.
The
scientific coordinator, defines, after consulting the Assessing Commission,
the research lines and scientific work to be promote by the House Museum
and directs and coordinates its development. Other members of the staff
include Carme Castells, director manager, and Carlota Oliva, coordinator. |

Courtyard
|
|
| The
house is exactly as it was when the writer used to live there and it was
improved without affecting its original structure. The first building already
existed in the 15th century, but it was enlarged and changed until today's
structure. Therefore, at the ground floor there are the offices, a conference
room, the library, a room for researchers and the original kitchen, as
well as a courtyard, a water tank, several typical examples of Balearic
flora, and a wine cellar press. |

| In
the first floor is a permanent monographical exhibition on Llorenç
Villalonga, which allows us to know many things related to his life, thought
and work. Its main intention is to let Villalonga speak for himself. That
is why, besides photographs, personal objects, letters, manuscripts, postal
cards and books, there are newspaper articles signed by him, quotations
that in some way define his complex character, fragments from his personal
correspondence, and from his literary and journalistic work. |

|
|
|
| The
author’s office is, without any doubt, the most interesting place to visit.
It is at the first floor, and maintains its original furniture. Here the
visitor is taken into the writer's intimacy, in a suggestive environment,
where it is not difficult to imagine him, surrounded by his favourite books,
creating and shaping some of his works. |

|
| To
complete the exhibition there is some interesting bibliographic material,
which includes 2.000 volumes from his private library, letters, articles,
booklets, manuscripts, photo albums... All the material is, in some way,
related to Villalonga. The House Museum is also a documental centre on
Balearic contemporary literature, thus completing other libraries and archives
in the island. For this, the House Museum Llorenç Villalonga comprehends
seven aspects related to contemporary literature. The funds include:
a)
Recorded
interviews, documentaries... especially on Balearic literature but
also on world literature.
b)
Tapes
and CD’s with interviews, speeches and literary readings by the writers
themselves.
c)
Photographs
from the authors.
d)
Manuscripts
and typed originals, containing poems, plays and prose by Balearic contemporary
authors.
e)
Copies of foreign editions in several languages written by Balearic
authors.
f)
News
and articles related to contemporary Balearic writers.
g)
Journals, notebooks and writers' letters.
All
these materials are immediately available thanks to a database, constantly
up-dated. It allows us to find quickly all the information needed.
The
House Museum also offers the most important literary magazines and
literary
supplements of the newspapers published in the Balearic Islands, as
well as a selection of world-wide supplements. |

Permanent exhibition
|
|
| Besides
the permanent exhibition, the House Museum offers other exhibitions related
to different aspects of literature and culture. There are also other activities,
as guided visits to exhibitions, short courses and seminaries, conferences,
round tables, literary readings, theatre, workshops, literary debates,
concerts, etc. |
